A
Career at the Commercial Bar
Practice
at the commercial bar involves advising and representing domestic
and international companies and individuals in a wide range
of business relationships, and on a great variety of subject
matters. The unifying element in much commercial work is the
law of contract, tort and equity, but the context of the work
ranges over a broad field: at 3 Verulam Buildings, the context
may be insurance and reinsurance, banking transactions (both
domestic and international), sale of goods and international
trade, employment, the construction industry, copyright and
other intellectual property, franchising or entertainment
and recording contracts. Members of chambers are also regularly
instructed in professional negligence cases, involving solicitors,
accountants, brokers and other professionals. There are several
others who work extensively in company law and corporate insolvency,
advising public and private companies and their directors,
and the receivers, liquidators and creditors of insolvent
companies. Many Members of Chambers act in cases involving
commercial fraud, asset recovery and cross border issues,
which may involve extensive international work.
Some
Members of Chambers specialise in private and public international
law, acting in arbitrations involving private companies, states
and state owned companies.
Many
of the more senior Members of Chambers act as advocates or
advisers in cases before foreign courts, particularly, in
the Far East and the Caribbean. Chambers also has developing
links with lawyers in Europe and North America.
