Paul is developing a broad commercial practice encompassing litigation, arbitration and advisory work, with a particular emphasis on banking, financial services, professional negligence, civil fraud and private international law. Paul is regularly instructed as a sole advocate or as a junior and has appeared in the High Court and in County courts across the country. His recent article on contract damages ('Contractual interpretation and remoteness', [2010] LMCLQ 150) was cited extensively by the Singapore Court of Appeal in its recent decision in MFM Restaurants v Fish & Co [2010] SGCA 36, the leading case on contractual remoteness in Singapore.
During pupillage, Paul gained experience across the breadth of commercial law, including banking litigation (including claims under guarantees, bills of exchange and documentary credits); financial services and regulatory work; consumer credit law (including PPI disputes and unfair relationship claims); insolvency and bankruptcy; professional negligence (including claims against investment managers, investment bankers, structural engineers and builders); civil fraud (including mortgage fraud and investment fraud); sale of goods; conflict of laws (including seizing jurisdiction and forum non conveniens); partnership law; construction law (including disputes under JCT contracts); intellectual property and copyright; trusts law; and substantial costs litigation. Paul also acquired substantial experience of arbitration under the ICC Rules.
Before coming to the Bar, Paul was a classical pianist with an international performing career, playing at venues from the Royal Albert Hall to the Sydney Opera House.
