Matthew practises across the entire field of commercial litigation. He has appeared in disputes arising out of the collapse of banks and investment funds, frauds on companies by directors and employees, business transfer and share sale agreements, auction sales of fine art and antiques, the manufacture and sale of goods, the construction of oil platforms and drilling of gas wells, software development projects and telecommunications contracts.

He is an experienced advocate in court and arbitration proceedings, and has been noted for his "robust and penetrative" cross-examination. He has appeared as sole advocate in a string of recent cases in the high court and court of appeal, including Redmayne Bentley v Isaacs [2010] EWHC 1504 (Comm), Innovatis v Ejder Group Ltd [2010] EWHC 1850 (Ch), Duke of Norfolk v Hibbert [2010] PNLR 11, M&J Polymers v Imerys [2008] 1 Lloyd's Rep 541 and Morin v Bonhams & Brooks [2004] 1 Lloyd's Rep 702 (CA).

Matthew also has a busy international practice. He has been called to the Bars of the British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands, and has been instructed in substantial litigation in Jersey, Anguilla and the Bahamas. International arbitration forms a significant part of his practice, and he appeared in the series of reported decisions in Republic of Kazakhstan v Istil [2006] 2 Lloyd's Rep 307, [2007] 2 Lloyd's Rep 548, and [2008] 1 Lloyd's Rep 382.
