Arbitration

“3 Verulam Buildings is respected for its international arbitration practice, which has recently been strengthened as a result of the addition of two experienced arbitration counsel in the last two years. Its members provide representation on a wide array of issues before arbitral tribunals, and also handle ancillary applications in the courts. An instructing solicitor notes: "They are very quick to respond, very commercial and they understand where we and ultimately the clients are coming from." Chambers & Partners UK 2017. “3 Verulam Buildings is ‘among the best’ for international arbitration and has ‘good people at all levels’ who provide a ‘helpful and responsive’ service. The chambers acts on matters across the board, and has seen a particular growth in energy, construction and banking-related arbitrations. A significant highlight has been advising the Russian Federation in its resistance to the enforcement of the record $50bn arbitration award following its dispute with Yukos.”

At 3VB you can be assured of instructing barristers at the pinnacle of the legal profession. From arbitrators to advocates in arbitration proceedings our barristers are involved in the whole spectrum of international arbitration cases including – what is not common at the Bar – a number of high profile and precedent setting investment treaty cases involving claims against India, Cyprus, Kazakhstan and Serbia.

One of these cases will be the first time any court or tribunal has considered the question of tacit succession to a bilateral investment treaty, which is particularly important to CIS States.  Another is the much publicized claim against Cyprus arising out of the demise of its second biggest bank. This will make precedent on banking regulation in international law.

3VB’s pre-eminence in this area is complemented by our associate members, all of whom are highly regarded arbitrators: Gopal Subramanium; Sophie Nappert and Prof. Dr Kaj Hober.

As a major force in international commercial arbitration our cases include representing parties in one of the largest ongoing international arbitration disputes arising out of India and the first to go to full hearing under the LCIA (India) Rules, as well as very public dispute over one of the world’s largest gold mines in Pakistan.

3VB’s barristers continue to act on arbitration related court applications, including cases which raise interesting questions of law such as an award’s legal status in international law when it has been set aside by the domestic court.  With this wealth of experience available our clients can be reassured of the best possible legal support.

The recent launch of our international arbitration seminar series forms part of our client service programme.  Speakers include Gopal Subramaniam, (former solicitor general of India), Lucien Wong (chairman of SIAC) and Cherie Blair QC (Chair of Omnia Strategy).
