Transferring Solicitors
3VB welcomes applications for pupillage from practising solicitors or those completing their training contract. In the last two years we have offered pupillage and then tenancy to two solicitors by this route, one from Linklaters and another from Freshfields.
Transferring (qualified) solicitors are exempt from applying through the usual Pupillage Portal route (although this is still an option), and consequently from the timing restrictions for application and commencement of pupillage. This means transferring solicitors can apply at any time of year (although often we ask them to apply through the Pupillage Portal for convenience and comparison with others) and can sometimes start pupillage shortly after their application and interview. Depending on the level of experience, a qualified solicitor may also be permitted by the Bar Standards Board to do a reduced length of pupillage.
To transfer, a certificate of good standing needs to be obtained from the Solicitor's Regulation Authority before an application for permission to transfer to the Bar can be made to the Bar Standards Board. The Bar Standards Board will indicate what sections of the Bar Transfer Test need to be completed, and what length of pupillage must be undertaken. The Bar Transfer Test is currently organised by BPP law school twice a year, during April and September.
The process needs to be begun in good time, and at 3VB we are happy to provide successful candidates with support through the process. We also recognise the unique time pressures and sensitivities around applications from working solicitors and will do our best to provide applicants with an interview time that can accommodate a working day.
